Welcom to my blog

Summary:

During the last decade, Göteborg city has been faced great challenges in development of its waterfront areas. On one hand, there are many abandoned industrial land placed next to the water in central parts of the city which need to be renewed. On the other hand, there is a high risk of flooding in these low‐lying areas due to future climate changes.

The intention in this project is to introduce an appropriate urban waterfront structure in Frihamnen- former shipyard area along the Göta River in central Göteborg- which fulfills both economic and environmental needs of the society. In other word, the purpose is to find a balance between economic growth and the need to address climate change in the development of this area. Download the complete project description from here.

Sopplunch i Älvrumet (soup luch in Älvrumet )

Each thursday people gather in Älvrumet, have lunch and talk about Central Älvstranden (river bank areas in Gothenburg city center). On 7th of October (past Thursday) Maria Strandberg gave a short presentation about her master thesis project at Chalmers University. In this project Maria proposes to turn the 40 year old Götaälvbron (one of the two bridges over Göta river) into pedestrian and bike bridge and create a green link between north and south part of Gothenburg city center. She shows how in this way it is possible to reuse the old bridge instead of tearing it down and at the same time add to the quality of city center.

I am really fascinated with her idea. I think it is innovative and inspiring. However, it is a pity that the discussions focuses more on mitigative measures (reusing existing structures and promoting non-motorized means of transportation) rather than adaptive ones (welcoming water in our cities).

Here are some pictures of the event:
