Welcom to my blog

Summary:

During the last decade, Göteborg city has been faced great challenges in development of its waterfront areas. On one hand, there are many abandoned industrial land placed next to the water in central parts of the city which need to be renewed. On the other hand, there is a high risk of flooding in these low‐lying areas due to future climate changes.

The intention in this project is to introduce an appropriate urban waterfront structure in Frihamnen- former shipyard area along the Göta River in central Göteborg- which fulfills both economic and environmental needs of the society. In other word, the purpose is to find a balance between economic growth and the need to address climate change in the development of this area. Download the complete project description from here.

My reflections on the "RiverCity International Workshop" from the urban design perspective (part 1)

Introduction

RiverCity International workshop organized by Gothenburg municipality and Centrala Älvstaden project in June 2011. 10 groups of 8-9 experts from all over the world were chosen to participate in five-day-long workshop about the development of central riverside areas in Gothenburg. The main goal of the workshop has been to gather concepts and ideas from internationally recognized professionals in order to formulate vision and strategy for transforming Gothenburg into a “green, inclusive and dynamic” city.

My experience during "RiverCity International Workshop", Gothenburg June 7-11, 2011

I was one of the local hosts during the RiverCity International Workshop. We were a group of 11 university student volunteers and each of us was responsible to assist one of the participating teams during the workshop.

Bellow I present my personal reflections on this workshop:

First impression

Our roles as local hosts were not totally clear. This was both exciting and terrifying at the same time. So my strategy to deal with such a situation was to be a perfect listener in the first day in order to evaluate the situation and find my place. So I made no comments of any kind and just helped with whatever I asked to do. I was almost invisible. That actually helped a lot since the situation was totally different than what I expected.

In the near future I will write more in detail about my thesis project.

Master thesis: Abstract

ABSTRACT

Sea level is rising and glaciers are shrinking. Some animals have already moved to new homes while others are at the risk of extinction. Many agreed that it is already too late to stop climate change completely. We should accept the fact that our world is changing faster than we expected. It is time to change the way we build our cities in order to cope with this change.

Climate adaptation in Sweden

In Sweden like most parts of the world mitigation issues have dominated climate policy to date. The work mainly concerns limiting the impact through reducing GHG emissions. Sweden is relatively developed in mitigation policies and techniques such as using renewable energy sources and building passive houses while climate adaptation is in its infancy here. The issue of climate adaptation has lately risen in Sweden as a response to several extreme weather events during the past decade and it’s under development.
